Why it matters
Southern Nuclear wants to run four accident-tolerant fuel test assemblies at Vogtle for a third cycle. Comments close 5 November 2026, hearing requests 7 December 2026.
Southern Nuclear asked the NRC on 17 July 2026 to let four lead test assemblies for accident-tolerant fuel at Vogtle run a third cycle. The NRC proposed finding no significant hazards on 6 October 2026.
Southern Nuclear filed the amendment 17 July 2026, to change Vogtle's technical specifications 2.1.1.2 and 4.2.1 and authorize four accident-tolerant fuel lead test assemblies for a third operating cycle.
The NRC proposed a no significant hazards consideration finding 6 October 2026 and set the deadlines that follow. Comments on the finding are due 5 November 2026. A hearing request or petition to intervene is due 7 December 2026.
The no-hazards finding is not final. If waiting would force Vogtle to cut power or shut down, the NRC can issue the amendment before 5 November 2026.
